Welcome to Year 6

Hello and welcome!
We are a lovely mix of curious and passionate learners. We look forward to sharing with you all the fantastic learning that takes place in our classroom. In Year 6, we strive to always try our best whilst having fun along the way, so please keep checking our class web page for news and updates. We are taught by Miss Gilpin (Mrs Robinson on a Wednesday morning) and also have the wonderful Miss Haymer-Bates and Mrs Hand to help us with our learning.
Our PE lessons are on a Wednesday and Thursday so the children need to come into school dressed in weather appropriate kits on these days. On a Wednesday we will be taking part in Judo in the school hall, on Thursday we will try and get outside for our lessons as much as possible.

English

To begin this term, we will be exploring a variety of photographic prompts to be able to write to entertain. We will break down our writing to consolidate how to construct our writing. We will use adjectives to effectively enhance imagery to make the setting more vivid. We will learn about techniques of using sensory detail to create atmosphere and incorporate these into our narrative writing.

We will then focus on the text 'Explorer' by Katherine Rundell and 'Wonder Garden' by Jenny Bloom. We will be writing to inform with an outcome of creating a fact file. We will follow a plan to research further using other sources. We will discuss formal vs informal language and focusing on the need of formal writing when writing a non-chronological report.

Maths

In maths this term, we are beginning with the unit of place value. We will be representing, partitioning, estimating and comparing numbers to 10,000,000. We will be looking at methods on how to round any integer and work out problems involving negative numbers. We will then move onto adding and subtracting integers as well as looking at common multiples, rules of divisibility and solving multi-step problems. We will be introduced to different methods to solve calculations including long multiplication and division.

Science

In Science this term we are focusing on 'Animals including Humans'. We will begin by knowing what the circulatory system is and how it supports the body. We will explore the role and autonomy of the heart in the body as well as the components that make up the blood and what their roles are in the body including the transportation of water and nutrients. We will move onto discovering how diet, drugs and lifestyle have an impact on the body including carrying out an investigation on how heart rate changes during exercise. We will write up our investigation into prediction, method, results and conclusion.

History

In history this term our learning is based around the question 'Which was the most important for the Ancient Maya - their knowledge or their beliefs?' To start the term, we will discover who the Ancient Maya were and where they lived. We will discover how they were innovators of technology and trade. We will learn about how their cities were structured and about their beliefs. We will also discover how they used to write and calculate and how the civilisation ended.

Homework

Each week there will be a 10 minute session set on Times Table Rockstars. The log in details can be found on the inside cover of your child's reading record. On a Monday, an adult in class will check your child's reading record to see if they have recorded 3 reading sessions throughout the week. These can be completed in school or at home, reading with an adult or independently.

Year 6's also have an extra homework each week, this is a SPAG activity that will be found in their CGP homework book. Each task will be introduced on a Wednesday and needs to be handed in by the following Wednesday. If your child is unable to complete this at home, they are warmly invited to come along to homework club which is with Miss Gilpin every Tuesday lunchtime.
