Lancasters

Hello and welcome to... Lancasters!

We are a lovely mix of curious and passionate young learners from year 4 . We are looking forward to sharing with you all the fantastic learning that takes place in our classroom. In Lancasters, we strive to always try our best whilst having fun along the way, so please keep checking our class web page for news and updates. We are taught by Miss Gilpin (Mrs Robinson on a Thursday afternoon) and also have the wonderful Miss Bembridge, Miss Humphreys and Mr Taylor-Benton to help us with our learning. Our PE lessons are on a Wednesday and Friday so the children need to come into school dressed in weather appropriate kits on these days. With it being the summer term, we will try and get outside for our PE lessons as much as possible.

Homework

Each week there will be a 10 minute session set on Times Table Rockstars. The log in details can be found on the inside of your child's reading record. On a Monday, one of the adults in class will check your child's reading record to see that they have recorded 3 reading sessions throughout the week. These can be completed in school or at home reading with an adult or independently.

Summer - Term 2

Hello and welcome back to school for our last term of the school year! We hope you had a wonderful half term break and we are excited to have you back with lots of exciting learning planned for the brand new term. Our theme this term is 'Our Wonderful World'.

In English this term, we will be focusing on the text ‘David Attenborough’ by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara. We will discuss and explore features of a biography text by reading and evaluating a range of biographies including the lives of Jane Goodall and Tenzing Norgay. We will learn the importance of writing in chronological order to introduce points in detail. We will plan our own biographies by creating a life map which encourages us to break up the information into different sections including childhood, adulthood, main achievements and how we should remember them. We will include illustrations to help us remember key facts. Later on in the term, we will focus on the text ‘The Wolves in the Walls’ by Neil Gaiman and discuss and explore what a descriptive piece of writing has by creating a fantasy world through drama and role playing. We will retrieve key information about dreams and focus on key vocabulary from the text, using a thesaurus to widen our vocabulary. We will create a nightmare storyboard to help plan and organise our ideas.

In our Book Dive sessions, we will be exploring the nonfiction book ‘There are Bugs Everywhere’ and ‘The Ways of the Wolf’ by Smriti Prasadam-Halls.

In Geography this term our learning is based around the question ‘Where is the most polluted place in Sturton-by-Stow?” To begin the term, we will be looking at the location of Sturton using a range of different sources. We will look at ordnance survey maps to plan areas for investigation. We will plan a data collection by observing, car counting and litter collecting and grid reference points for locations identified on a map. We will then present our data using charts. Towards the end of term, we will interpret what we have found and conclude what the data has told us. By the end of our learning, we should be able to accurately answer this term’s question.

In Science this term we are focusing on ‘Living Things and Their Habitats’. We will begin by understanding that plants and animals can be sorted and categorised in different ways. We will distinguish between vertebrates and invertebrates by their characteristics. We will go on a minibeast hunt around our school gardens to try and look for vertebrates and invertebrates and create charts to show our results. We will learn about classification keys and how we can use them to identify different species. We will then create our own classification grids to sort and organise local species.  We will revisit our learning from last term about deforestation and how humans can have a detrimental impact on our own environment.
